Description

This is a pack of 4/4 Thermally Modified Red Oak lumber, FAS grade, kiln dried, random widths mostly 7″ wide currently wide and random lengths cut to 3-6′ long to ship easier via FedEx. Longer lengths are available for pickup. Shipping lengths over 7 feet long can be an increased shipping cost. Boards are typically skim planed to 15/16″ thick but rough or final planed is an option as well. So, what is thermally modified lumber? See below for a description of what makes thermally modified lumber so unique:

Thermally modified wood is produced in a specialized, 3-phase kiln chemical free process using only heat and steam. An initial gradual increase in temperature reduces the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of the wood. Phase 2 sees a rapid spike in temperature. The cellular composition of the wood is altered in this high-heat, oxygen-deprived environment which converts the natural acids and sugars so as to no longer be a food source for mold, rot or fungal decay. This change also renders the wood ‘hydrophobic’, meaning it loses much of the natural tendency to absorb water going forward making it a great choice for exterior applications without the need for chemicals to extend the life of the lumber in an outside environment. As a natural byproduct of the process the wood takes on a richer, dark tone throughout the board giving it a look similar to that of exotic species. Boards can be cut, routered, sanded etc. and the rich dark color goes all the way through the board. Thermal modification is one of the most natural, chemical-free ways to extend the life of wood products in a harsh exterior environment, but this lumber is also suitable for any woodworking application.
